  Rainbow Zebra Piñata Strikes Again!

After finishing my first rainbow zebra, I figured that if I had to make another one, I could probably do it in about two weeks.  When I said that I naturally had no intention of ever making another one.  But now that I have, I know that two weeks is a laughably inaccurate estimate.  The first rainbow zebra took about six weeks, and this one took about five.

I made a few minor design changes the second time around that had a huge overall effect.  The first rainbow zebra was intended to look pretty much like a real zebra in Technicolor, but I exaggerated some features in the second one to give it a little more of a cartoonish/militaristic look.  The ears and mane are bigger this time around, and so are the hooves.  The shoulders are bigger and the haunch is rounder.  The body shape is a little more war horse and a little less... um... bovine (no offense).  The nose is also a little bigger this time, but that wasn't intentional, it just turned out that way.

Where is the mane, you ask?  I completely forgot about it, that's where.  Adding that essential piece as a afterthought was kind of a hassle (see the Make a Zebra page), so I didn't make that mistake the second time.   Notice how the hooves are much wider than the legs this time.  The legs will get thicker when the crepe paper is fluffed up.  The hooves on the first Rainbow Zebra are flush with the legs.  When the legs on that piñata were fluffed, they widened by about 1.5 inches in diameter and the hooves ended up looking too small.

Both rainbow zebras are looking slightly to their left because making them stare straight forward would have given them more of a frozen, rigid statue look. The legs are positioned not quite straight down for the same reason.  Each zebra had three candy compartments.  You an see the hanging hooks attached to the two larger compartments, and there was a smaller candy compartment between those two.

The ears are much larger on the second rainbow zebra, and are leaning forward instead of tipped back.  I don't think I was even paying attention when I made the ears the first time, but the second time I made them larger to go with the exaggerated mane, and also made them lean forward to imply strength and confidence.

Here's a side-by-side comparison of the two Rainbow Zebras.
